Jamestown entrant falls short in M&T contest

A Jamestown-based nonprofit didn't claim the $10,000 top prize in an M&T Bank contest but still received a good-sized check.

Community Helping Hands was one of five finalists from around M&T's territory competing for the grand prize in the bank's first "Understanding What's Important Business Challenge." The top prize went to Waggies by Maggie & Friends, a Delaware-based nonprofit.

The other four finalists each received $1,000 prize grants each, and were recognized on what is known as Giving Tuesday. The five finalists were selected from about 500 community groups that were nominated.

A public online vote was a significant factor in determining the winner, but other factors were considered, as well. More than 20,000 votes were cast. Community Helping Hands, which finished second in the voting, provides emergency assistance to families in need, as well as training in basic job skills.
