The Kenmore Village Improvement Society recognized 8-year-old village resident Luca Sanfilippo on Monday with its monthly Good Neighbor Award for his efforts to light up his neighborhood with a smile and a free glass of lemonade.
Luca's mother, Nicole Lamantia, said her son told her in September he wanted to open up a stand and hand out free lemonade just to make people happy.
Lamantia told the KVIS that she read of his nomination for the award through tears.
"Luca has autism, and while he is verbal, he often has a tough time connecting with people," Lamantia told the KVIS. She said it was impressive to watch him interact with people of all ages and explain why he was handing out lemonade in exchange for smiles.
