AMATO, Jon Paul PhD

AMATO - Jon Paul PhD Passed away under Hospice care at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, NY, August 5, 2017. He was predeceased by his mother, Mary Louise (nee D'Arcangelo), father, Carl Amato and his beloved daughter, Shari Lynn Amato Button. He was born 1940 in Niagara Falls, NY and studied in the United States and Canada earning his BA from Arizona State University, his masters from SUNY at Buffalo and doctorate in economic geography from the University of Toronto. He served as Professor in the departments of Geography and Planning at Buffalo State College and SUNY at Albany. His professional publications included works on environmental analysis, agricultural location theory and regional land use planning. He worked 12 years as a professional economic developer for the states of New York and Arizona. He provided technical assistance to rural Arizona communities and assisted New York communities in their efforts of economic revitalization. A longtime coin collector and member of the American Numismatic Assn. since 1981, Amato joined the numismatic cataloging staff of Heritage Auctions, Dallas, TX, after retirement from his position with New York State. He returned to Albany in 2010 and continued as a part time Heritage cataloger working on nearly every catalog for the past 7 years. Recently, he planned to publish a background and census of the issuance of 1798 quarters. The staff at Heritage plan to continue that research project in his memory. Jon Paul will be missed by cousins Bernice "Billie" Pascoe and Ronald (Nancy) D'Arcangelo; dear friends Kathy Chur and Yuriy Ponomarev; his extended family and Heritage friends. A private burial service was held at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY for Jon Paul and daughter, Shari. Donations in their names may be made to St. Jude's Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
