Property owners in North Tonawanda will pay the same tax rate in 2018 as they did this year.
The Common Council passed the $36.2 million budget for 2018 Tuesday night, holding the tax rate steady at $13.28 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. Because of an increase in the city's total valuation, the total amount to be collected in taxes will rise 0.83 percent, but that's a full percentage point under the state-mandated tax cap.
General fund spending for 2018 is down about $219,000 from this year, but City Accountant Amanda Reimer said most of that is attributable not to a spending cut but an accounting change. The city's contingency account of $210,000 is being moved out of the regular budget into a reserve fund, she said.
