Successful big game hunters are required to report their harvest within seven days. Failure to report is a violation of the Environmental Conservation Law. It’s cut and dried. Then why are reporting rates only 40 percent across the state?
Reporting the taking of a deer or bear is important to the scheme of things as far as big game management is concerned. To help prod hunters along, DEC has tried to make things easier to complete its little catch phrase “Take It – Tag It – Report It” that is currently being pushed.
Hunters may report via DEC’s onlinegame harvest reporting system (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8316.html) or by calling the toll-free automated reporting system at 1-866-GAME-RPT. A third option is to use DEC’s mobile app “NY Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife” by Pocket Ranger (http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/96470.html). Good luck.
