'Code Blue' shelters ready to help homeless face winter

As winter approaches, the city's emergency weather safety plan for Buffalo's homeless population begins.

"Code Blue" is in effect when evening temperatures or wind chills fall to 15 degrees or below. The program runs until March 15 and provides outreach, case management, transportation, shelter and a warm meal, Mayor Byron W. Brown announced Wednesday.

Shelters are located at:

  • Matt Urban Hope Center, 385 Paderewski Dr.
  • St. Luke's Mission of Mercy, 325 Walden Ave.
  • Harbor House, 241 Genesee St.

"Code Blue 32" is an expanded initiative that takes effect at the Matt Urban and Harbor House shelters only when nighttime temperatures and wind chills are between 16 and 32 degrees. Harbor House also will serve as a daytime warming center on those days.

Rich Products donated funds to purchase a new van for the two programs.
