John Murphy Show: A must-win game for Bills against Chargers

ESPN football analyst Trey Wingo joined John Murphy and Donald Jones on WGR-550 AM on Tuesday.

Wingo discussed the similarities of the rare Saints 7 win run and the 1993 Dallas Cowboys — the only team to do the same, the outstanding play of the Vikings, Eagles and Rams, the Panthers beat down of the Miami Dolphins, Wingo's thoughts on the Bills — Chargers game, and the importance of the Steelers' win over the Colts en route to their showdown with New England in Pittsburgh.

Bills Wall of Famer and CBS Sports' Steve Tasker joined the show to discuss the horrific loss to the Saints, the outstanding play in Philadelphia, the importance of the Dolphins-Colts-Patriots run in December, and what Wade Phillips' influence on the Rams defense. Tasker finished up answering caller questions on Peterman's readiness, and the nuances of returning a ball from inside the end zone on kick return and other aspects of special teams play.

LA Times' Sam Farmer also joined Murphy and Jones, and he talked about which team is winning the "Battle for LA" between the Chargers and Rams, the progress on the new shared stadium, are the Chargers in for the long haul?, and the status of Philip Rivers after his self-report into the concussion protocol.

Quotable

Donald Jones: "The point is — get to the playoffs. Back in, drive in, it doesn't matter — you get to the playoffs."

Sam Farmer: "LA was probably more valuable to the league without teams than with them, in order to lord it over other teams and their stadium situations."

Trey Wingo: "This was a compound problem — the Bills not only played poorly, but played against the best team playing in the NFL."

Trey Wingo: "I think it's a must-win game for Buffalo. This is a show me what they're made of game — and they've had a couple of those already ... They should beat this Chargers team ... the way the Chargers find new and excruciating ways to lose games is remarkable."

Trey Wingo on Jerry Jones' attempts to undermine Roger Goodell's extension: "Well, y'know that's Jerry's plan ... Jerry's not backing down, the only question is if he can get other owners to go with him."

John Murphy: "All you had to do to know how the Saints were playing was see the smug smile on Sean Payton's face."

Steve Tasker: "You don't get your starter and your backup half ready to play ... it's on Nathan Peterman to get himself ready to play. The only way to earn experience is to make yourself the best option on the team."

Steve Tasker: "If a guy calls for a fair catch, he's off your radar. Find the ball ... When I was back there returning I was just making sure it didn't wind up on the ground."

Steve Tasker on potentially coaching special teams: "Do you think I want to be around a bunch of guys like me? ... It's a lifestyle, but not one for me ... I loved coaching my kids in youth football, but I was the assistant to the assistant to the assistant to the assistant."
