Few spots remain for would-be Turkey Trotters

If you want to run the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning and haven't registered, today could be your last chance.

"Literally, very few spots are left," Geoffrey Falkner, YMCA Buffalo Niagara Communications Director, said Tuesday afternoon.

The regional Y, which organizes the event, limits the field to 14,000 for safety reasons.

Those still interested can register at ymcabuffaloniagara.org until that threshold is reached. Falkner expects that to happen Tuesday or Wednesday. Registration runs $41.

The 8K – nearly 5-mile – race is the YMCA Buffalo Niagara’s largest fundraising event. Proceeds support the Y’s financial assistance program. More than $300,000 was raised last Thanksgiving.

This year will mark the 122nd installment of the oldest consecutively run footrace in North America.

It will start at 9 p.m. Nov. 23 at Delaware and Tacoma avenues in North Buffalo.

The Independent Health Family Branch YMCA – between Main Street and Wherle Drive at 150 Tech Drive, just east of the Erie Community College North Campus in Amherst – will host a Runners' expo and prerace packet pickup from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Nov. 22.

In the meantime, relive the glory of the Turkey Trot through our gallery of races gone by.
