If you ever see players sniffing something on the sideline, those are (probably) smelling salts. There may not be much science behind them, but after all these years, players still take them to jolt their systems and feel fully awake for the game.

"It's a terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible, rancid smell," Bills defensive end Eddie Yarbrough said. And yet, he takes a hit before every game, and again at halftime.

Lorenzo Alexander was one player with a dissenting opinion: "I used to see a lot of special-teamers sniffing them before they'd run down on kickoff. (They said,) 'You want some of this? You want some of this?' And I said, 'Y'all are crazy.' But I guess whatever it takes, right?"
