Officer Lehner to be remembered at Veterans Day gathering

Fallen Buffalo Police Officer Craig E. Lehner, an Iraq War veteran, will be remembered at noon Saturday at a park dedicated to patriots and heroes.

Lehner will be remembered during a Veterans Day gathering at Russell J. Salvatore's Patriots & Heroes Park, 6675 Transit Road, Lancaster.

Lehner, 34, died during a police underwater recovery team dive practice a month ago in the Niagara River.

He had served with the Army National Guard's 105th Military Police Company for 16 years and was deployed to Iraq in 2011.

Members of his family will attend the event along with Buffalo Police officials and Lehner's K-9 unit partner Shield, a 4-year-old German shepherd.

Officials with the local Association of the Airborne 3rd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group, Army National Guard, are organizing the tribute to Lehner.

The Veterans Day event is also intended to raise money to help support men and women veterans receiving treatment for post traumatic stress at the Jack H. Wisby Jr. PTSD Clinic and Center for Hope at the Batavia VA Medical Center.

Those wishing to donate should make checks out to "VA WNY Healthcare System" and on the memo line state "GPF 1935 PTSD Residential Treatment Program." Checks for the Center for Hope, the women's facility, should also be written to "VA WNY Healthcare System," but on the memo line, it should state "GPF 1933 Women Veterans Residential Program." Donations can also be mailed to Alfred R. LaChance of the Airborne Association, 4732 Porter Center Road, Lewiston, NY, 14092.
