Conducting winter checks prevents costly mistakes

The recent change in fall and spring from daylight savings time to standard time and back again serves as a reminder to change batteries in smoke detectors.

One might want to add to the reminder list making sure the main shutoff valve to the water service also is in working condition. Cranking the valve closed and opening it again will help keep the valve from becoming inoperable should a plumbing emergency arise, which could have costly consequences.
