Homeroom Announcements: Friday's big games & more

What to watch for Friday

1. Football - Class A & D Far West Regionals at SUNY Brockport

Winners advance to next weekend's state semifinals at Union-Endicott High School.

Class D: Maple Grove vs. V-Clyde-Savannah, 5 p.m.

The Red Dragons are on the road to their third state semifinal appearance in the last four years, while Clyde-Savannah is making its first regional appearance since 2000.

Class A: West Seneca West vs. V-Wilson Magnet, 8 p.m.

It has been banner years for the Indians and Wildcats, who are making their first appearances in the Far West Regionals. West rallied to beat South Park, 27-24, while Wilson dominated No. 1 Irondequoit, 40-19.

2. Girls volleyball - Class B, C & D Far West Regionals at Daemen College

Winners advance to the state final four next Saturday in Glens Falls.

Class B: East Aurora vs. III-Cazenovia, 9 a.m.

The Blue Devils avenged a loss to Alden in 2016 with a three-game sweep of the Bulldogs this season. Cavenovia, from the Syracuse area, beat Section V's Wayne in four sets on Wednesday in the sub-regionals.

Class C: Portville vs. V-Le Roy, 11 a.m.

Portville ended Eden's run of eight consecutive state titles by sweeping the Raiders in straight sets in the overall Class C final. The Panthers won the Class D state title in 2014 and 2015 before moving up a class. Le Roy swept Section III's LaFayette in the sub-regionals.

Class D: Panama vs. V-Charles Finney, 1 p.m.

Defending state champ Panama plays Rochester private school Charles Finney to cap Friday's girls volleyball triple-header at Daemen. Panama swept Maple Grove in the Section VI final, while Finney beat Cuba-Rushford in five sets.

3. Boys soccer - State Catholic semifinals at St. John's University

St. Joe's is back in the state tournament for the first time since 2014 and play Chaminade at 5 p.m. Winner advances to the state final Sunday afternoon back at St. John's.

4. Football - Monsignor Martin semifinals: St. Joe's at St. Francis, 7 p.m.

The Marauders and Red Raiders played in one of the more exciting games of the regular season in Week 6. St. Francis beat St. Joe's, 29-26, with a clutch interception on the goal line on the final drive.

The winner tonight advances to the final next Saturday at New Era Field against either Canisius or Cardinal O'Hara, which play tomorrow afternoon.
