Kelly’s Civil War belief holds no compromise

Recently, Gen. John Kelly, White House chief of staff, suggested inability to compromise led to the American Civil War.

On March 21, 1861, Alexander Stephens, vice president of the Confederate States of America, spoke before the Confederate Legislature and said:

“Our new government is founded exactly – the great truth, that the Negro is not equal to the white man, that slavery – subordination to the superior race – is his natural and normal condition. Our new government is the first in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.”

I see little room for compromise in these beliefs.
