Fire extinguishers distributed by Niagara County are recalled

Kidde, a major manufacturer of fire extinguishers, has recalled some extinguishers with plastic handles or plastic push buttons, which were distributed to local residents by the Niagara County Healthy Neighborhoods Program for the past several years.

"The fire extinguishers can become clogged or require excessive force to discharge and can fail to activate during a fire emergency. In addition, the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose an impact hazard," Consumer Product Safety Commission said in announcing the recall Thursday.

The Niagara County Health Department said in a news release that county residents who received an extinguisher from the Healthy Neighborhoods Program should contact Kidde toll-free at 855-271-0773 or online at kidde.com to see if they are eligible for a free replacement.
