The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced two deer and bear check stations in Region 9 for opening weekend of the regular big game season in the Southern Zone. On opening day, Nov. 18, there will be a check station located on Route 16 in Holland (Erie County) from noon to 8 p.m. The station will also be open on Sunday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
On Sunday, Cabela’s (2003 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga) will be open as a check station from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. As an incentive to have biologists check your animal, the store will be giving out a Hunter’s Processing Package valued at more than $400 for one lucky hunter in a random drawing.
Deer and bear check stations allow for biologists to collect important data such as deer age and other information that is important to management of populations. These stations are also drop off locations for the Venison Donation Coalition. If you are going to donate a deer, please do so before 6 p.m.
