City of Tonawanda Third Ward race is 'too close to call'

Republican Michael R. Young is clinging to an 8-vote lead over Democratic Councilmember Sean Rautenstrauch in the race for the Third Ward City of Tonawanda Common Council.

Young has 521 votes, Rautenstrauch 513, according to the Erie County Board of Elections.

And with at least 33 outstanding absentee ballots, the outcome is too close to call.

The winner won't be known until sometime around Nov. 20, City Democratic Chairman Gayle Syposs said Wednesday.

Young appeared to have a 90-vote lead over Rautenstrauch late Tuesday night, but poll watchers said the unofficial vote totals being reported by the Board of Elections didn't add up. Syposs said it appears some numbers may have been transposed when poll inspectors first called in the results by phone. No other races were affected.
