Sherman man charged after pony is found with untrimmed hooves

A Sherman man has been charged with overdriving, torturing or injuring an animal after a pony on his farm was found with untrimmed hooves 10 to 12 inches long, the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office reported Sunday.

Deputies were called Oct. 18 to the home of Allen C. Detweiler, 35, of Route 76, after a neighbor reported that the animal had escaped a fenced area.

Detweiler was issued an appearance ticket and was allowed to keep the pony since it appeared to be well-fed and was not confined or otherwise abused, Deputy Mark Baglia told The Buffalo News. Other animals at the farm appeared to be in good condition, Baglia said.
