Everyone should support clean, renewable energy
This summer’s unprecedented storm after unprecedented storm should be an indication to everyone that it’s time to stop debating whether or not climate change is happening and accept that it is. The only question remaining is: What we are going to do about it?
Shifting to clean, renewable energy as soon as possible is one thing we can do to help us avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Here in Erie County, an estimated 80 percent of people support regulating carbon dioxide as a pollutant, and 69 percent support requiring utilities to produce 20 percent of their electricity from renewable sources, according to the 2016 Yale Climate Opinion Maps. People in our county support clean energy.
Each of us can do our part by asking our elected officials at all levels of government to support clean, renewable energy initiatives in our area. We don’t have to wait for our elected officials to act, however. Each one of us can take action right now and commit to using 100 percent renewable energy in our homes, businesses, schools, churches and throughout our communities. If you can’t commit to 100 percent, do whatever you can. Start by investigating the options for purchasing renewable energy available to you. By taking action and committing to run on clean, renewable energy, we can make a difference in our communities and the world.
