Legislature candidate Schoeneman initiates lawsuit, claims Lorigo defamed her

Democratic Erie County Legislature candidate Michelle Schoeneman on Friday filed a notice of summons against her opponent Legislator Joseph Lorigo, accusing him of defaming her in robo calls and social media and television ads regarding the opioid epidemic.

Schoeneman filed the summons in State Supreme Court, indicating Lorigo's campaign falsely alleged Schoeneman "wants to bring free heroin shoot-up sites to our community." She indicated she would file a complaint against Lorigo seeking $250,000 in damages if the false statements are published again.

"This is nothing more than a stunt," said Lorigo, the Legislature majority leader, adding that Schoeneman has made personal attacks against him and his family and false accusations about him. "If anyone is defaming anyone it's Michelle Schoeneman."

Lorigo said he intends to pursue an action against Schoeneman and her lawyer, Margaret Murphy, for filing a frivolous lawsuit.
