Hurricane victims get tuition break to attend ECC

Puerto Ricans and U.S. Virgin Islands residents displaced by hurricanes Maria and Irma may attend Erie Community College at the Erie County resident tuition rate for this year and next year.

The ECC Board of Trustees agreed to the tuition break for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years as a way to help hurricane victims start, continue or finish their academic programs.

The State University of New York Board of Trustees previously authorized state-operated colleges and universities to offer in-state tuition for 2017-18 to students displaced by the hurricanes.

ECC tuition for Erie County residents is $4,900 this year. Students from outside the state normally would pay $9,466 in tuition.

The admissions office at ECC currently is handling at least 10 applications for admission to the college for the spring 2018 semester from people who were displaced by hurricanes.
