Homeroom Announcements: Friday's big games & more

What to watch for Friday

1. Football - Section VI finals at New Era Field

Winners advance to next weekend's Far West Regionals at SUNY Brockport.

Class D: 1-Franklinville/Ellicottville vs. 2-Maple Grove, 5 p.m.

The Titans (9-0) look to dethrone reigning champ and state runner-up Maple Grove (8-1). F/E beat the Red Dragons in Week Three, 26-6.

Class AA: 1-Lancaster vs. 2-Williamsville North, 8 p.m.

Lancaster (9-0) ended its 17-year championship drought last year. Now the Legends will try to make it two in a row against fellow Class AA unbeaten Williamsville North (9-0).

2. Girls soccer - Class D & B Far West Regionals at Williamsville South

Winners advance to the state semifinals next weekend at SUNY Cortland.

Class D: North Collins vs. V-Wheatland-Chili, 5 p.m.

The Eagles (15-2-1) are looking to avenge an 8-0 loss to Wheatland-Chili (18-1-1) in last year's regionals.

Allegany-Limestone, North Collins moving on in girls soccer playoffs

Class B: Newfane vs. V-Aquinas, 7:30 p.m.

The Panthers (17-2-1) also repeated as sectional champs. They beat Palmyra-Macedon in last year's regionals, 2-1. Aquinas (15-5) beat Newfane back on Sept. 8, 4-1.

3. Boys soccer: Class D & A Far West Regionals at V-Spencerport

Winners advance to the state semifinals next weekend at Middletown High School.

Class D: Lafayette vs. V-Mount Morris, 5 p.m.

The Violets overcame the loss of several players and dominated on its way to a Section VI title.

Class A: East Aurora vs. V-Pittsford Southerland, 7:30 p.m.

The Blue Devils came away with a 4-3 win in OT to remain undefeated and dethrone Grand Island's two-year reign as sectional champs.

4. Cross country - Section VI Championships at Bemus Point Golf Club

The best cross country runners compete for sectional championships and a berth to next Saturday's state competition at Wayne High School in Rochester. Racing starts at 11 a.m. and wraps up at around 3:30 p.m.

5. Girls swimming - Section VI Championships at ECC's Flickinger Center

Those who advanced from Wednesday's swimming trials will get a shot at sectional titles starting at 5 p.m. States are Nov. 16-18 at Ithaca College.

6. Volleyball - Monsignor Martin finals

There's a championship doubleheader at Sacred Heart.

Boys: Canisius vs. St. Mary's of Lancaster, 5 p.m.

The Crusaders go for their 18th straight Catholic title against the Lancers, who swept St. Joe's on Wednesday.

Girls: St. Mary's of Lancaster vs. Sacred Heart, 7:30 p.m.

In a rematch from last year, the Lancers are looking to secure their seventh title in a row. The Sharks swept Mount St. Mary in the semis.

High School Extra: St. Mary's, Canisius advance to Monsignor Martin volleyball finals

7. Girls volleyball - Class D final at Brocton

No. 2 Maple Grove takes on reigning champ Panama, the fifth seed in the playoffs. Neither team has dropped a set in the quarter and semifinals. Winner advances to the Class D Far West Regionals next Friday at Daemen College.

8. Boys volleyball - Division I semifinals at Lackawanna

Winners advance to next Tuesday's 8:30 p.m. championship back at Lackawanna.

- 2-Frontier vs. 6-Williamsville North, 5:30 p.m.
- 1-Lockport vs. 4-Orchard Park, 7:30 p.m.

Lockport, the No. 1 team in Western New York all season, takes on Orchard Park, a team it sept back on Sept. 13. Frontier beat North twice in ECIC I play this season, first in five sets and then in three sets. The Spartans took out defending-champ Clarence in Wednesday's quarterfinals in five sets.
