It looks like this year's race for Hamburg highway superintendent is the most expensive highway superintendent's campaign in Hamburg history.
Incumbent Tom Best Sr. has spent $89,357 on his race against Ted Casey, the town's traffic safety coordinator, according to financial disclosure records on the state Board of Elections website.
Did Best, a former police captain, really spend $89,000 on his race, including $56,620 for printed materials? he was asked.
"What?" he said. "Oh jeez, they'll be after me."
A quick check of records revealed that $566.20 was spent on printed materials, and the decimal point was put in the wrong place.
And total spending on the race was lowered to a more reasonable $35,400, with Casey spending $2,084 and Best spending $33,316.
