Orchard Park to outlaw drones from taking off in town

If Orchard Park can't stop drones in the air, the town is moving to prevent them from taking off.

Town Board members Wednesday night are expected to repeal the 2015 code restricting drones from flying around New Era Field and open air events in the town, because Federal Aviation Administration regulations govern airspace.

But the board plans to enact a new law preventing unmanned aircraft from taking off or landing within one mile, and two hours before or after an open-air event, such as parades, concerts, festivals, sporting or recreational events.

The new code is land-use related, not airspace related, Councilman Michael Sherry said. He said the intent of the law is to protect citizens gathered at the stadium and large community-sponsored events. A public hearing is expected to be scheduled Nov. 15.
