Liberty Yellow Cab has enlisted technology from Cornell University to help it compete with ride-hailing apps Uber and Lyft.
The Buffalo company has begun using automated call-taking technology called RedRoute to handle about 90 percent of its incoming calls. The system takes live calls from customers requesting rides, creates ride tickets for dispatch and makes customer callbacks. It's capable of correcting addresses, giving real-time ride updates and predicting more accurate wait times for customers.
It cuts outs the need for a human operator in 85 percent of calls, the company said. It began using RedRoute four weeks ago.
The Buffalo taxi company already has its own Liberty Yellow app for customers who would like to hail rides using their smartphones. Cab rides can also be hailed through the Curb app.
