Bookkeeper admits to $63,000 theft from employer

A former bookkeeper for a Williamsville real estate company pleaded guilty Tuesday in Erie County Court to embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from her employer.

Nancy Lynn Smith, 47, of Buffalo, waived indictment and pleaded guilty as charged to grand larceny in the second degree. Prosecutors said Smith had stolen nearly $63,000 from Acquest Development between May 2014 and August of this year, when she was arrested.

The felony count carries a maximum sentence of 5 to 15 years in prison, but Judge Kenneth F. Case said he would consider ordering probation when Smith returns Feb. 6 for sentencing, provided she has made progress toward repaying the stolen money. Smith remains free on her own recognizance until then.
