Niagara County Clerk Joseph A. Jastrzemski is hosting public information sessions on pistol permit recertifications tonight in Lewiston and Wednesday in North Tonawanda.
The NY SAFE Act gun control law mandates that all pistol permit holders recertify with the State Police every five years, and the deadline for the initial recertification is Jan. 31 for those who had permits before 2013.
Tonight's meeting is set for 7 p.m. in Lewiston Town Hall, 1375 Ridge Road. Wednesday's session will be held at 7 p.m. in the Sikora American Legion Post, 950 Payne Ave., North Tonawanda.
“The SAFE Act should never have been passed, but failing to comply with the recertification mandate gives the state an excuse to take away privately-owned guns,” Legislature Majority Leader Randy R. Bradt said. “We want to talk with pistol permit holders about this, and about how best to proceed.”
