Billboards are new tool in fight against lead poisoning

"Renovate Right!"

That's the message on 60 new billboards posted throughout Buffalo and Erie County to mark National Lead Poisoning Week, which ends Saturday.

The 60 billboards, including 30 in Buffalo, are aimed at homeowners and tenants who make renovations that could disturb pre-1978, lead-based paint.

The ads will be posted in rotating locations through next January, said Mayor Byron W. Brown, who was joined by Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz and representatives from the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo on Friday to unveil the billboards, which are part of a continuing partnership between the three entities that was announced in May 2016.

Buffalo also created "Renovate Right" brochures that will be distributed to local community centers, hardware stores and block clubs, Brown said.
