Letter: Have a band perform our national anthem

Have a band perform our national anthem

While we’re talking about respect for our national anthem, let’s mention the way it is performed at sports events. To have it sung by pop singers with their “interpretation” is a disgrace. It was never intended to showcase a performer.

Personally, I think “The Star-Spangled Banner” was a poor choice for our national anthem. The melody is a British drinking song. Perhaps “America the Beautiful,” with both words and music by Americans, would have been a better choice.

Nevertheless, “The Star-Spangled Banner” is our national anthem, so when it is played I stand with respect, hand on heart, and do my best to sing it.

My final word is to suggest that it be played by a good high school or college band at New Era Field. How about the American Legion Band of the Tonawandas? Of that we could be truly proud.
