Mayville water project calls for major upgrades

Mayville is renowned for having some of the best tasting drinking water in Chautauqua County.

Now, the public water infrastructure that supplies that drinking water to 1,850 residents in Mayville and neighboring portions of Chautauqua is about to get a major upgrade.

A water system improvement project calls for finding two new groundwater wells for the village's water supply as well as improvements to its water treatment facilities, meters, fire hydrants, a water pumping station and a storage tank, according to a notice published Thursday by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

About a mile of 8-inch cast iron water mains will be replaced as part of the improvements, which also will include replacing nearly 2,000 feet of an aged asbestos cement water main along Evans Street, the DEC reported.
