Robber who targeted grocery shopper at MetroRail station gets 5 years

In a crime that was captured on NFTA security cameras, Stephen Watkins and Gerald Robinson tried to rob a man who was on the way home with groceries. When their victim tried to run, Watkins caught up with him and began hit the man.

That attack has earned Watkins, 24, a five-year prison sentence on his conviction for attempted robbery. Robinson, also guilty of attempted robbery, was previously sentenced to one year in jail.

The robbery attempt happened at 1:45 p.m. April 22 at the LaSalle metro rail station on Main Street. The victim eventually was able to hit a call button for NFTA Police Officers Shawn McDonnel and Nicholas Cacciatore, who located Watkins and Robinson.

Assistant District Attorney Erin E. Hart prosecuted the case.
