Chopped-up carcass found in dumpster behind Delaware Avenue building

A chopped-up carcass of a bear was found Tuesday afternoon in a dumpster behind a stately building on Delaware Avenue, according to a Buffalo police source.

Police and ambulance crews were standing on top of a dumpster behind 1140 Delaware Ave., peering into it, at 3:30 p.m. The property, at the corner of West Ferry Street, across the street from Canisius High School, was recently purchased by the school.

A construction worker had called police after spotting the carcass.

While police were at the scene, a transit police officer showed up and said that he killed a bear, skinned it and left the carcass in the dumpster, a police source said. An NFTA spokeswoman later clarified that the individual is a former employee.

A Canisius High spokesman said the school is renovating the building to turn it into music and art classroom space. The building is scheduled to open next month.
