A driver from Fredonia spotted driving the wrong way on Interstate 86 was charged Saturday with felony driving while intoxicated, as well as aggravated DWI because he carried a passenger under 16, Chautauqua County deputies said.
James E. Murphy, 47, also was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation because he was driving though his license had been revoked, deputies said.
Deputies said they received a call around 10 p.m. of a person driving the wrong way on the interstate. They then learned the auto had left the highway and was heading through Mayville on Route 394.
Deputies said they found the car parked on a sidewalk on South Erie Street in the village. Because Murphy had a previous DWI conviction within the past 10 years, the charge was elevated to a felony, deputies said.
