Niagara University has renamed its dining hall in honor of local restaurateur Russell J. Salvatore.
The Russell J. Salvatore Dining Commons recently underwent an $8 million renovation. Salvatore, who received an honorary doctorate from Niagara last year, made what the university called "a generous gift." The university did not disclose the amount.
The dining facility now includes a variety of seating options and an open kitchen concept. Students were consulted on the design concepts and the food to be offered.
Salvatore founded Russell's Steaks, Chops and More and the attached Grand Hotel on Transit Road in Clarence in 2008. He also founded the nearby Salvatore's Italian Gardens and Garden Place Hotel, now operated by his son, Joseph.
