John Murphy Show: Thurman Thomas, Michael Vick discuss Tyrod Taylor, bye week

Bills Wall of Famer and Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas joined John Murphy and Donald Jones on WGR-550 AM on Wednesday.

Thomas discussed his recent trip and viewing of the Saints-Lions game, Thomas' friendship with Drew Brees and then the interview was joined by Michael Vick, who was in town to interview Tyrod Taylor. The four discussed players from the Virginia area, Vick's influence on players going to Virginia Tech — and Vick's mentorship of Tyrod as a youth. Vick also discussed with Murphy, Jones and Thomas the importance of having perspective on the amount of (and lack of) weapons Taylor has been afforded as the Bills come out of the bye week. Thomas finished with a discussion of the run game post-bye week and the importance of using Taylor and LeSean McCoy as weapons in the run game.

Bills insider Chris Brown opened the show, and updated the audience on the health statuses of Cordy Glenn and Jordan Matthews, as well as some of the keys Brown took from the earlier media session with coach Sean McDermott — where Deonte Thompson was a subject, as well as where the Bills run game can go with Thompson in the lineup. Brown also talked about the possibility of one of the five Bills tackles being traded as the deadline approaches.

Safety Micah Hyde also joined Murphy and Jones, and he talked about injury to Aaron Rodgers, whether he thought the hit was legal and in the case of the Bills, where the defense can go and how they can improve. Hyde also discussed Jameis Winston, preparing for two quarterbacks and how the defensive back focus on "making four plays" a game. Hyde finished talking about the transition from Green Bay to Buffalo and how welcoming the city has been.

Finally, St. Francis High School head coach Jerry Smith talked about his season thus far, how the players have responded and a look ahead to potential playoffs at the high school level. Smith also told the story of a player whose misadventures with a port-a-potty resulted in said player waking up in Duluth, Minn.

Quotable

Donald Jones: "You can make a move with one of those guys, maybe not Cordy — and improve your team, either with a player or a draft pick."

John Murphy: "You can win with just beating people up. And that's the way the Bills have played it in the last few years ... what has to change to me is the offensive line."

Chris Brown on the possibility of an offensive tackle being traded: "I certainly expect Bills to field calls for that position with the plethora of players they have there."

Donald Jones: "I think it starts with the offensive coordinator being creative ... the offensive line — everything starts in the trenches ... if your offensive line and coach Dennison is on point, they'll be fine."

Michael Vick on black quarterbacks being scrutinized: "We're playing a game that we love, and we're held to a higher standard and we should accept it."

Micah Hyde: "We gotta prepare for their A-game and know he can make every single throw."
