Lackawanna Council OKs downtown improvement projects

The Lackawanna City Council OK'd $2.5 million in improvements to the city's downtown area.

Among the improvements expected are:

  • Stamped concrete crosswalks at Ridge Road and Electric Avenue and at Ridge and South Park Avenue.
  • A mixed residential-commercial development at the site of the former St. Barbara's Church at 551 Ridge. The church located on a 1.3-acre parcel was demolished in March 2011.
  • A pathway between the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, 2655 South Park Ave., and Our Lady of Victory Basilica, 767 Ridge.

"These are two tremendous assets in Erie County," said Lackawanna Mayor Geoffrey Szymanski. "Other than being on the same road, they have never been connected."

The Downtown Revitalization Initiative Grant was designed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to make downtowns walkable and livable.
