After six months, developer revives 80-home East Amherst subdivision

Natale Builders has brought its plan to build 80 houses on a sprawling plot of land in East Amherst out of limbo.

Natale's attorneys on Friday asked the Town Board to schedule a public hearing on the zoning change required for the project, Amherst Supervisor Barry Weinstein said. Weinstein said he doesn't expect the board will hold a hearing before the end of the year.

The move came one week before a deadline that could delay Natale's efforts to develop the site along New Road – and one day after CEO Angelo Natale said he felt no sense of urgency to act.

Asked about the Friday filing by his lawyers, Natale texted, "To be honest with you, I was surprised as well."

Natale had put the $35 million project on hold in June, two months after the Amherst Planning Board recommended approving the rezoning, as he talked to town and county officials about addressing safety issues raised by neighbors.
