After retiring, Sister Kathleen Dougherty thought she would volunteer teaching reading to Somali Bantu children. There were lots of kids and very little program. She and her fellow sisters of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur opened their home and started the Somali Bantu after school program five days a week. From that, a farming program was started with land made available for the Somali Bantu community in East Aurora.
