Finding healthy “me time”

By Bronwen Battaglia

Parents’ wellness often takes a backseat to their children’s activities. Running from school to music lessons and from playdates to the soccer field can make it challenging to carve out "me-time" for exercise. That can leave parents and caregivers feeling even more depleted.

One local organization had that in mind when they organized and overlapped their Saturday morning schedule of youth ballet and adult wellness classes. On Saturday mornings, while children ages three and up are engaged in ballet, parents can take an hour for themselves for yoga or Pilates at the Neglia Conservatory of Ballet. Newly housed in the 6th floor of the Tri-Main Center, adult classes are held in a big corner studio overlooking the tree-tops of Buffalo.

Executive Director and instructor Heidi Halt’s Core & Floor Barre class is a unique hybrid of Pilates, strengthening, stretching and floor barre – ballet movements practiced on a mat instead of standing at a barre.

Barbara Cole of Buffalo was happy to have something constructive to do while her daughter participated in dance class.

"Our Saturday mornings became mother-daughter outings that both of us looked forward to with equal enthusiasm," said Cole. "I took great pleasure in challenging myself in the Pilates classes and, even more, I was proud to model for my daughter that caring for your body is a lifelong endeavor."

Neglia Conservatory of Ballet teaches classical ballet to students from across Western New York and Ontario, and is known for high-quality training and professional productions at Shea’s including Baba Yaga and The Nutcracker.

Their new space offers three state-of-the-art studios with sprung floors and natural light. New youth students can arrange a free trial class, and drop-in rates are available for adults to try a class anytime.

"We’re making ballet and wellness accessible to everyone," says Halt.
