Man felled by gunshots near Niagara Falls gas station

A 21-year-old Niagara Falls man has been arrested in a fatal shooting in a gas station’s parking lot Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at around 10:20 a.m., when the Niagara Falls Police Department received a call that a man was shot at 19th Street and Walnut Avenue. Witnesses told police that after the victim was shot, he was put into a car and driven off.

Police then received a call from Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center that a shooting victim was brought in.

Lerowne Harris, 35, of Niagara Falls was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, police said.

Officers located a semi-auto pistol on the ground in the parking lot and detectives pieced together what had occurred. They put out a description of the suspect’s vehicle, which was located by a patrol officer and towed to police headquarters.

As investigators were preparing an information packet to disseminate to law enforcement personnel, the suspect, Denzel Lewis, walked into police headquarters with a relative. Lewis was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon, both in the second degree.

Moe Ahmed, an employee of the gas station who was not working at the time of the incident, said the victim was walking on the sidewalk and started running towards the parking lot, “and that’s where he fell.”

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to 286-4553.
