5 charged in Erie County jail smuggling scheme

A Buffalo woman and four inmates at the Erie County Holding Center have been charged with conspiring to smuggle marijuana into the jail, according to the Erie County Sheriff's Office.

Tianna Hunter, 24, was arrested Tuesday night while she was a visitor at the holding center. Deputies had a warrant to search Hunter and while the search was being conducted she removed a hidden balloon containing marijuana she had on her, the sheriff's office said.

Hunter was charged with introducing contraband into a prison, conspiracy, criminal sale of marijuana and possession of marijuana.

The arrested inmates, all of whom are from Buffalo, were Melvin Williams, 20; Demetrise Oaks, 36; Indaleccio Rodriguez, 27; and Dijon Brown, 24. They were charged with attempted possession of prison contraband and a misdemeanor conspiracy count.

The arrests resulted from an investigation that spanned several months, officials said.
