A Pittsburgh-based development firm that specializes in Family Dollar and other retail stores is planning to open a new location of the discount chain in a former industrial area on Clinton Street that neighbors say is in dire need of such services.
Durban Group wants to construct a new 8,300-square-foot store at 1029-1043 Clinton St. It would include 35 parking spaces and a bicycle rack.
The company asked the Buffalo Planning Board on Tuesday to support an amendment to the city's zoning map, changing the property from allowing heavy industrial uses to light industrial uses that would permit a retail use. The firm noted the site is within 100 yards of five different zoning districts.
The board instead recommended that the Common Council adopt a specific retail designation for the site. A formal site plan will be submitted for review shortly.
Two neighbors who spoke said they couldn't wait for it to open, citing a long drive to the nearest supermarket. "When could you build it?" asked Gail A. Ziolkowski of Jones Street. "It's a desperate need."
