It’s one thing to hear Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” reinvented by prolific singer/songwriter Ryan Adams, reissued in the acoustic vein once favored by the song’s creator.
It’s an entirely different thing to hear the tune recast with tip-toing keys, heavy guitars and the screamo-accented chorus accessed by Detroit rockers, I Prevail. The Brian Burkheiser-led quartet’s aggressive cover garnered tens of millions of YouTube views and Spotify streams, and ultimately catapulted sales of its debut EP, “Heart vs. Mind.”
But like any good introduction, both served as mere preview of a potential more fully revealed on its first full-length, last year’s “Lifelines.” Born from the band’s transition from fledgling unknowns to Internet sensations to its current iteration as an emotionally charged, Fender-led foursome, the Fearless Records release reveals a band ready to advance its own thought-provoking art.
As for the growling Swift tribute that gained its greatest fame, rest easy. It’s still part of act’s growing on-stage arsenal.
