When Wayne F. Kozak arrived in State Supreme Court Tuesday morning, he was unrecognizable as the shaggy-haired, bushy-bearded man in the mug shot taken after his arrest in April.
Kozak, 48, was scheduled for a pretrial conference related to his indictment on a charge of intentional murder in the death of his mother. Mary Louise Kozak, 79, was killed April 20 in the Eden home she shared with her only son.
Kozak, quiet and attentive, stood before Justice John L. Michalski with his hair shaved close to his scalp and with only a stubble of a beard.
It has been nearly six months since Kozak was arrested, and examinations are still being conducted to evaluate Kozak’s mental condition and whether he is fit to stand trial. Attorneys on both sides agreed the evaluation should be completed within a month and the judge set Kozak’s next court appearance for Nov. 14.
No motive has ever been revealed for the shooting, which was Eden’s first homicide in nearly 31 years.
