George C. Rodgers, of East Amherst, president of the former Rodgers Welding Supply, died unexpectedly Sunday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Amherst. He was 61.
Born in Buffalo, he was a 1974 graduate of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute and was to be inducted into the school’s Sports Hall of Fame next month with the 1972-73 basketball team.
After attending Erie Community College, he joined Rodgers Welding Supply, a company founded by his grandfather in 1940.
Mr. Rodgers retired as president when the company was sold in 2008.
He was a member of the American Welding Society, the National Welding Society and the National Welding Supply Association.
An avid golfer, Mr. Rodgers played junior golf at Transit Valley Country Club and was a member at Bridgewater Country Club and Cherry Hill Country Club.
He was a Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres season ticket holder. A devoted fan of the Tragically Hip, he saw the band in concert more than 100 times.
Mr. Rodgers maintained a summer home in Point Abino, Ont.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, the former Laura Leone; his mother, Nancy Rose Anchor; a brother, Paul; and two sisters, Rosanne Elder and Therese.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 8:45 a.m. Friday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 200 St. Gregory Court, Amherst.
