Mike Donnelly, the winningest football coach in Muhlenberg College history, passed away on Oct. 4 of complications from leukemia. He was 65. An Albany native and Ithaca College graduate, Donnelly was defensive coordinator for two seasons under coach Sam Sanders at the University at Buffalo in the early 1990s.
Muhlenberg will host a celebration of Donnelly's life and coaching career on Sunday in Allentown, Pa.
The 2017 season was Donnelly's 21st at Muhlenberg. He turned the Mules into a perennial championship and postseason contender in the Centennial Conference. His teams won seven Centennial titles.
He also coached at Albany, East Stroudsburg, Rensselaer, Ithaca, Lafayette and Columbia. As defensive coordinator at Columbia, Donnelly coached future Buffalo Bills defensive end Marcellus Wiley.
