Saturday's intriguing football games

--  Kenmore West Blue Devils (1-4, 0-4 in Class A North) at Williamsville East (3-2, 3-1), 2 p.m. Saturday at Williamsville East. Simply put, the Flames need to win in order to enhance their chances of making the playoffs in coach Mike Torrillo's first season. This is their third straight home game and they look to keep the good times rolling.

A key for their success will be senior Joey Shifflet, who scored the game-tying touchdown with 4:30 left last week in a 23-22 win over North Tonawanda. Shifflet has two fourth-quarter TDs in comeback triumphs by the Flames this season. Junior quarterback Colson Skorka threw two touchdown passes in the victory last week.

Kenmore West, a younger team than past editions, has experienced some tough sledding since opening with a win over Niagara Falls. The Blue Devils had leads in each of their last three losses, including a 48-44 defeat at Sweet Home in Week Three and last week's 20-16 loss at home to Williamsville South. Joseph Stewart finished with 177 yards receiving and a touchdown in the loss to South.

Other intriguing Saturday games on the schedule include:

-- St. Joe's Marauders (2-3) at St. Francis Red Raiders (1-4), 1 p.m. at Polian Field. A rematch of last year's Monsignor Martin semifinal clash won by the Red Raiders, who look to snap a three-game losing streak in front of what should be a nice crowd for Homecoming. Cole O’Connor rushed 15 times for 123 yards in last week's 48-0 loss at defending Pennsylvania state champion Cathedral Prep. The Marauders have dropped three in row. Jaden Lofton rushed for 169 yards on 19 carries in last week's 34-6 loss at Cardinal Mooney in Ohio.

-- Bennett Tigers (3-2) at Burgard Bulldogs (2-3), 1 p.m. at Riverside's Dingboom Field. Old Harvard Cup rivals renew pleasantries during this nonleague game. Tigers have won three of their last four since opening with a loss at unbeaten Lancaster. Bulldogs gave old friend Cheektowaga a tough time last week but dropped their second straight game.
