One of the top men's lacrosse programs in the country will be making its way to Buffalo this weekend.
The University of Notre Dame is set to scrimmage Team Canada at 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday at All High Stadium behind Bennett High School on Main Street. Canisius College will play Team Canada beforehand at 9 and 11:15 a.m. Tickets are $5 for adults. Children 10 and under are free.
The two-day event, which also includes Cleveland State and Robert Morris, is part of the Canadian senior men's national team's evaluation camp ahead of the Federation of International Lacrosse Men's Lacrosse World Championship next summer in Netanya, Israel. New Golden Griffins head coach Mark Miyashita is an assistant coach for the Canadian team, which will be split up into two, 20-man squads.
There are a couple other Canisius connections as well. Golden Griffin Hall of Famer and former Canisius head coach Randy Mearns is the head coach for Team Canada. Former player and assistant coach Jason Levesque is also an assistant coach, while former Griff Dan Carey is team coordinator.
The Fighting Irish beat Marquette, 15-9, in the first round of the NCAA Championships last season before losing in the quarterfinals to Denver, 16-4.
"We are excited about heading to Buffalo to play the Canadian National Team," Notre Dame coach Kevin Corrigan told the school's website. "That is going to be a purely competitive opportunity for us. We will get to actually play their 40-man roster right now that they will reduce for the World Games next summer. This trip is part of their selection process and we will get to play two games against two 20-man squads and that will be a great day of competition in Buffalo."
Local high school grads playing for Canisius include Carter Stefaniak (St. Joe's), Jonathan Phillips (Sweet Home), Drew House (St. Joe's), Lex Oakes (Clarence), Adam Dunbar (East Aurora), Thomas Zacher (Medina) and Blake Rickan (Williamsville East).
