Area around Silo City isn’t suitable for heliport
Ellicott Development and the Paladinos are making news again, this time by proposing a heliport along the banks of the Buffalo River directly next to Silo City. The helicopters would be taking tourists on flights over the waterfront, perhaps as far as Niagara Falls. Sounds nice, but they are picking the wrong location for this venture.
Silo City has been undergoing major ecological regeneration projects to repair years of industrial use. Wildlife is returning to the area and, together with nearby Tifft Nature Preserve, real headway is being made to restore and protect the area. How will the kayakers and other boaters be affected by a helicopter taking off directly adjacent to the river?
On top of that, Silo City is home to a vibrant arts community that regularly holds outdoor theater, music festivals, intimate jazz quartets, poetry readings, films and more. The thought of those performances being interrupted by the constant drone of helicopters echoing off of the silos is unacceptable. I’d like to see them find a new location that is more suitable. If you agree, please attend the public hearing on Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
