Letter: Maybe it’s time to revise treaty with South Korea

Maybe it’s time to revise treaty with South Korea

It seems ironic that the same person who took us out of a climate change agreement because it was bad, who took us out of the trans-Pacific trade agreement because it was bad, who questions the Iranian nuclear agreement because it is bad, apparently thinks that we cannot improve on our 60-odd-year-old treaty with South Korea.

North Korea says in part that it is pursuing its nuclear program because we have troops on the DMZ ready to invade its homeland. Might we not consider that South Korea, after 60 years, is much more able to defend itself and that, therefore, we might think of transferring our troops to a less threatening position, thereby removing the excuse for pursuing nuclear weapons?

Conversations with our allies and their neighbors could provide a framework for a much better deal.
