Houghton College students from Iran, Burma, Thailand and Tanzania will participate in an international ecumenical celebration at 11 a.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 1 Symphony Circle.
World Communion Sunday is marked each year on the first Sunday in October around the world, said Rev. Elena Delgado. It was adopted in 1940 by the National Council of Churches, and has grown into an international event.
Portions of Sunday's liturgy originated in Korea, Australia, Japan, South Africa and the United States. Homemade breads representing many countries will be shared during the ceremony. Congregants are asked to wear clothing representing their countries.
Houghton, a Christian school in Allegany County, started a satellite campus at the historic church in 2014. Houghton Buffalo started with an enrollment of 16 students. Today more than 50 students are earning associate's degrees in liberal arts.
